Smartling is on a mission to make translation ubiquitous, by using technology to drive down cost and turnaround time while maintaining exceptional quality. We started this over a decade ago by building the first cloud-based translation management system to help companies improve efficiency, drive consistency and scale their translation processes.

Now, a new technology emerges. Generative AI is at the top of everyone’s minds and executives across industries are asking their teams to use it. But the question is, does it actually work in translation?

This past year, we’ve been focused on figuring out that answer – specifically, whether AI can help reduce errors, improve fluency, and ultimately bring the cost of human-level quality down significantly.

The answer is a resounding yes. AI is working and at scale.

We have seen AI working to expand leverage, improve the accuracy of glossary term insertion, apply formality, and more.

However, it takes a lot of time and research to identify the places where AI can be the most effective and deliver a strong return on investment. That’s where the help of a partner, like Smartling, comes in, so you don’t have to do it on your own.

A critical component of our strategy is our investment in R&D to make sure that we’re able to provide the most comprehensive LanguageAI™ solution in the industry. We have multiple patents on our work with generative AI, and our engineering team has delivered over 70 major features or enhancements across an astounding 3300 production releases just in the past year.

New foundational models are emerging daily with new features, such as number of parameters, inference time, fine tuning availability, increased size of context window, privacy and security. We review and analyze these models, and based on our assessment, determine if and when we’ll begin testing this model for our customers’ translation needs.

We focus on the following: will implementing this model help us deliver the best quality, cost, speed, and experience in the world?

When the answer is yes, we add it to our product. Like we did with our AI-Powered Human Translation solution. which now accounts for more than 50% of the content running through our system. This solution, which utilizes AI features alongside Smartling’s linguists, has helped more than 100 customers cut their cost of translation in half while improving turnaround time and maintaining human quality.

Due to this AI success, we are now making that technology available for companies to use with any translators via our brand new AI Translation Toolkit. The toolkit includes a suite of AI translation features, like LLM-enhanced Fuzzy Match Repair, that dramatically improve the performance of translators.

We’re excited to see how our customers can expand their reach and optimize their spend with this new offering. And we plan to continue shouldering the burden and cost of model analysis, selection, and implementation for our customers so they can get the most out of generative AI.
